Types of Prosthetic Legs
There are two types of prosthetic legs, mechanical and microprocessor. Both of these can be used in the knee and the foot joints of the prosthetic device. Each type are useful for different situations, mechanical knees are more affordable and are more durable, since it is made from durable parts and are less complex. Microprocessor knees are great in more situations and are able to adapt to more situations and terrains.
Mechanical
Mechanical prosthetic legs provide everything needed to walk safely but do not have a microprocessor. They use different technologies to provide support and stability. These include hydraulics (fluids) and pneumatics (air). Mechanical prosthetics have strong and durable parts that can withstand significant wear and tear. They also offer a number of different configurations and customization to suit your needs.
Microprocessor
Microprocessor prosthetics feature advanced microprocessors that provide a number of features. Some features include a more natural walking feel and the ability to mimic a more natural walking gait. It can do this by using sensors and processors to control the hydraulics in them. Microprocessor prosthetics also offer a level of control to adapt to different types of terrain and uneven ground and provide more stability. They can also be adjusted based on the activity to adjust the speed and more based on your situation.
Key Components of a Prosthetic
Liner, Suspension and Socket
- The liner is the interface that sits between the limb and the suspension. It is made out of a number of different materials for different situations.
- The suspension is the sleeve that fits over the liner to connect with the prosthetic. The suspension with the liner makes a safe connection to the socket.
- The socket provides an adapter for connecting to the prosthetic knee or foot or any other functional part.

Knee
The knee in a lower body prosthetic for those who need it provides stability and mobility. The knee, whether it is mechanical or uses a microprocessor, influences the feel of walking and other motions such as walking up inclines or stairs. They often use different technologies for their operation, such as pneumatic (air), hydraulic (fluid), or a single-speed mechanical swing.
Foot
The foot in a prosthetic is a limb that provides support for walking or running. There are a number of different designs for prosthetic feet for various needs and activities. Meeting your Specialist
Your first appointment will include an initial assessment and also a chance to meet your specialist and ask questions.
If you have a prescription from your doctor, be sure to bring it with you.
Be prepared to discuss your medical history and also talk about your goals and expectations. We will also complete a physical assessment and try out a variety of orthotics to see what best meets your needs.
Please dress comfortably and bring shorts. We may need to measure, cast or use 3D-scanning to customize your fit and maximize comfort.
