Foot orthotics to get you moving
Our foot orthotics are custom-made by our Orthotists to fit your foot. When the orthotic is custom-fit for your foot, it will prevent your foot from overextending which will then ease pain in those areas. Also, our orthotics provide beneficial treatment for a wide range of medical issues. For example, diabetes, osteoarthritis, severe pronation and supination, and more. To make sure our orthotics fit you, we will take a 3D cast or mould of your foot. We also offer other lower body orthotics. If any of these interest you, contact us today!
SMO/UCBL
Supramalleolar Orthosis (SMO) are orthotics that help keep the foot in alignment while also allowing free ankle movement.

Supramalleolar Orthosis (SMO)
The University of California Berkeley Laboratories (UCBL) Orthosis in a shoe insert that supports the mid and rearfoot. It also stabilizes flexible foot deformities. UCBLs are also known as heel cups.

Both of these are inserts put into your shoe. These are useful in helping to treat symptoms caused by the following conditions:
- Diabetes
- Multiple Sclerosis
- Osteoarthritis
- Hypermobility
- Cerebral palsy
- Subtalar instability
- Flexible calcaneal deformities
- Tibialis posterior dysfunction
- Guillain-Barre syndrome
- Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMT) disease
- Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS)
- Stroke
- Peripheral neuropathy
- Drop foot
These inserts aim to provide various treatments for your foot and ankle. These include increased stability, foot clearance, and also improving either pronation or supination. SMO and UCBL also aim to help redistribute pressure and adapt to surfaces easier. Also, they prevent excessive movement and help resist external forces. They also protect your foot and ankle and provide shock absorption.
Types of insert modifications
If needed we will take a cast or a mould of your foot to create a custom orthotic. This is to make sure your foot is in the proper position. It also allows us to make sure there is minimal pressure on the joints. We also provide various padding inserts to also help correct issues. These include:
- Heel cushion
This is padding to cushion the heel. Used to help with heel pain, plantar fasciitis, shock absorption, boney heel syndrome and heel spurs. - Forefoot extension
For people who require more cushioning under the metatarsal and forefoot area. Used to help with forefoot lesions and metatarsalgia. - Metatarsal pad
A pad that is used to raise and spread the metatarsals. - Metatarsal head cutout
A pad that has cut under the 1st metatarsal head. This is used most commonly with supinators and hallux limitus. - Morton’s extension
A pad that runs along the anterior edge under the big toe and can be made to run to the edge of the toe if needed. - And more
These inserts can then be combined to create your custom-made inserts.

Shoe Modifications
Shoe modifications modify the shoes themselves. This is in contrast to the inserts used in SMO/UCBL devices. Shoe modifications provide various benefits. These include ankle and foot stability while also protecting the ankle and foot. Not only that, but they also provide shock absorption and redistribute foot pressure. These modifications will also restrict movement and resist external forces on the foot and ankle. The modifications for the shoe are custom to the shoe, so they cannot be used with other shoes. They can help with a wide range of conditions. These conditions include:
- Leg length discrepancy
- Severe pronation
- Sever supination
- Osteoarthritis
- Diabetes
- Planovalgus
Types of shoe modifications
Our Certified Orthotists modify shoes based on your needs. Some modifications we base on a mould taken of your foot. The modifications may also be padding added to the shoe to accommodate a condition. Some modifications we make to the shoe include:
- Shoe raise
Add height to a shoe by adding padding underneath the sole of the shoe. This can also be applied to one or both shoes. - Heel cushion
Modification is done to the interior of the shoe to cushion the heel. Used to help with plantar fasciitis, heel pain, shock absorption, boney heel syndrome and heel spurs. - Rocker bottom
Modifying the sole of the shoe to be thicker and also have a rounded heel. Helps improve range of motion and also reduces the use of some joints. - Buttress
A modification is done to the outsole, midsole and also upper of the shoe. It also is used to help the medial or lateral support of the mid and rearfoot. - Scaphoid pad
A modification is done inside the shoe to add padding to the medial longitudinal arch. Used to support the inside arch of the foot. - Forefoot extension
